The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in camera at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 200, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Raymond Gravel, Luc Harvey, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit and Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 15, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of the Court Challenges Program.
 

It was agreed, — That the Report on the Protection of Language Rights under the Court Challenges Program, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Report on the Protection of Language Rights under the Court Challenges Program be presented in the House no later than December 14.

 

At 9:27 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:33 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Mauril Bélanger moved, — That the members of the Standing Committee on Official Languages be invited to participate in the Consultations on Linguistic Duality and Official Languages planned for January, 2008.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 7.

 

On motion of Yvon Godin, it was agreed, — That, whenever possible, meetings held with a Minister or with the Commissioner of Official Languages be televised.

 

Michael D. Chong moved, — That the Government table a comprehensive response to the Report on the Protection of Language Rights under the Court Challenges Program within 120 days of the presentation of the report to the House.

 

At 9:56 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:58 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 7.

 

Luc Harvey moved, — That the Committee add an appendix to the Report on the Protection of Language Rights under the Court Challenges Program stating that the Committee does not wish to receive a response from the Government.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 0; NAYS: 7.

 

At 10:12 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
