The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in camera at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, France Bonsant, Gord Brown, Rodger Cuzner, Jacques Gourde, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Michael Savage and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Colleen Beaumier for Hon. Judy Sgro, Hon. Gurbax Malhi for Ruby Dhalla and Denise Savoie for Tony Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin, Analyst; Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, November 26, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Employability in Canada.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the draft report, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the report be entitled: Employability in Canada: Preparing for the Future.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analyst be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee append to its report a supplementary/dissenting opinion from members of the Committee provided that it is no more than 5 pages in length and submitted electronically to the Clerk of the Committee in both official languages, no later than March 25, 2008 at noon.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report.

 

It was agreed, — That a news release be prepared by the Analysts and the Clerk, in consultation with the Chair, for publication on the Committee's website and for distribution upon presentation of the report to the House.

 

At 10:12 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:12 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Michael Savage moved, — That the Standing Committee of Human Resources and Skills Development and Persons with Disabilities conduct hearings on the Government of Canada’s intent to create a Crown Corporation for the purpose of administering the Employment Insurance Fund and that the Committee call such witness as deemed necessary to assess the implications of transferring the administration of Employment Insurance from the department of Human Resources Social Development Canada to a Crown Corporation.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned until the next meeting.

 

At 10:27 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
