Adjournment Motion Proposed Under Standing Order 26 / Application Accepted

Debate urgent

Debates pp. 11131-2

Background

Mr. Starr (Ontario) sought leave to move the adjournment of the House, under the provisions of Standing Order 26, in order to discuss "the threatened strike on Tuesday, December 20, by the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association as a result of the refusal of the Government to accept the recommendations of Judge John Robinson, the conciliator appointed by the Government". Before ruling, the Speaker invited Members to explain the urgency of the debate.

Issue

Does the application meet the requirements of Standing Order 26?

Decision

Yes. The application is accepted.

Reasons given by the Speaker

There is no doubt whatsoever that there is considerable public interest in this very important matter. Taking into account the fact that this is a short day, and that there is an hour and a half left for a debate, the Chair will accept the application. This is done despite the fact that there is an unclear procedural case against the motion on account of the notice of motion on the same subject which has been given to the Clerk.
