Selected Decisions of Speaker John Bosley 1984 - 1986
Adjournment Motions for Emergency Debates / Application not Accepted
Application not accepted
Debates p. 6406
Background
Mr. Broadbent (Oshawa) and Miss Nicholson (Trinity) each sought leave to move the adjournment of the House under the provisions of Standing Order 31 to discuss the collapse of the Canadian Commercial Bank. The Speaker ruled first on Mr. Broadbent's application and then on Miss Nicholson's.
Issue
Did these applications meet the requirements of Standing Order 31?
Decision
No. The applications were not accepted.
Reasons given by the Speaker
The Standing Orders direct the Chair to consider the probability of the subject matter of the proposed debate being brought before the House by other means. Since the matter is now being examined in the Standing Committee on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs, it is not proper at this time to hold an emergency debate.
