Leave granted: situation in indigenous communities

Debates, p. 2040

Context

On April 12, 2016, Charlie Angus (Timmins—James Bay) rose in the House to request an emergency debate, pursuant to Standing Order 52, on the suicide crisis in Canada’s indigenous communities. He emphasized the scale of the tragedy and argued that members did not have the opportunity to raise this issue through an opposition day motion.[1]

Resolution

The Speaker ruled immediately and granted the request.

Decision of the Chair

The Speaker: I thank the hon. member for Timmins—James Bay for this request for an emergency debate. I note the gravity of this situation, and I believe this does meet the exigencies of the Standing Order. I therefore grant an emergency debate for this evening.
