Portrait of Prime Minister Kim Campbell

Kim Campbell’s time as Prime Minister was brief, at 123 days, but both it and her official portrait were a series of firsts. Campbell, who was born in British Columbia in 1947, was the first female Prime Minister, and the first Prime Minister from B.C. She was the first female justice minister and attorney general, and the first female defence minister in NATO. Her official portrait by David Goatley is the first to be so rich with overt symbolism, and the first to feature Indigenous symbols, in the Musqueam cape from B.C. Also shown were her doctoral robes from academia, and a legal gown in reference to a controversial photograph of her.

David Goatley

David Goatley has completed more than 400 portrait commissions around the world, travelling to his subjects from his studio in Canada’s Pacific Northwest.

Goatley was born in England in 1954, and studied art at Camberwell College of Arts in London. He began his career in advertising, and succeeded in that industry for 16 years before the need for a different, more demanding creative outlet led him to portraiture. He relocated to British Columbia in 1992. He also paints murals and paintings inspired by his world travels.
