Olympic Torch 2010

The torch for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver has undulating curves that allude to snow drifts, or perhaps a whale breaching off the Pacific coast. It’s as if the torch sprung organically from the Canadian landscape.

Designed by aerospace experts at Bombardier, its materials of aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel speak to the rugged strength and mineral wealth of the landscape.

This torch arrived in the House of Commons on Dec. 10, 2009, held aloft by “Canada’s Sweetheart” Barbara Ann Scott, the 1948 Olympic champion figure skater. Scorch marks from the Olympic flame can still be seen on the torch.
