1896 Oil Painting
The precise location of the scene in this 1896 oil painting is uncertain. Homer Watson had great admiration for the natural landscape and the early settlers who lived upon it, as in this scene of a bonneted woman and border collie strolling beside a verdant stream amid farmland.
Watson was born in 1855 in Doon, on the Grand River near what is now Kitchener in southern Ontario. He was influenced by fellow Canadian Lucious O’Brien and by artists of the Hudson River School and was compared to English artist John Constable. His former home in Doon is a national historic site.
