Pursuant to the order of reference of Wednesday, November 16, 2022, the committee commenced consideration of Bill S-245, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (granting citizenship to certain Canadians).

Nicole Girard made a statement and answered questions.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

The committee resumed consideration of the motion of the Hon. Michelle Rempel Garner moved on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, which read as follows:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2):

(a) That, the committee extend the total number of meetings currently allocated to the current study regarding the Government’s response to the final report of the Special Committee on Afghanistan by a minimum of three meetings, to be held prior to Friday, March 31, 2023; and

(b) That, the Senator Marilou McPhedran, MP Marc Garneau, Minister Harjit Sajjan and Minister Marco Mendicino be invited to appear separately before the committee prior to Friday, March 31, 2023, for two hours each, to discuss matters related to the current study; and

(c) That, Lauryn Oates, of the Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan group, be invited to appear individually before the committee prior to Friday, March 31, 2023 for one hour, to discuss matters related to the current study; and

(d) That, summonses do issue for the appearances of former Minister for Women and Gender Equality Maryam Monsef, Laura Robinson, and George Young, to appear separately, for two hours each, at dates and times to be fixed by the Chair, but no later than Friday, March 31, 2023, to discuss matters related to the current study; and

(e) That, summonses do issue for the appearances of senior departmental officials from the Department of National Defence to appear before the committee, at a date and time to be fixed by the Chair, but no later than Friday, March 31, 2023, to discuss matters related to the current study.

Jenny Kwan moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting the paragraphs (c) and (d), and replacing the word “invites” with the following "invitation" in the paragraph (e).

Brad Redekopp moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “Friday, March 31” with the words “Sunday, April 30” and by adding the word “former” before “MP Marc Garneau”.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2):

(b) That, the Senator Marilou McPhedran, former MP Marc Garneau, Minister Harjit Sajjan and Minister Marco Mendicino be invited to appear separately before the committee prior to Sunday, April 30, 2023, for two hours each, to discuss matters related to the current study; and

(c) That, invites be issued for the appearances of senior departmental officials from the Department of National Defence to appear before the committee, at a date and time to be fixed by the Chair, but no later than Sunday, April 30, 2023, to discuss matters related to the current study.

At 5:39 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
