The Standing Committee on the Status of Women Presents its Report on Human Trafficking of Women, Girls and Gender Diverse Individuals
Ottawa, February 29, 2024 -
The House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women (the committee) today tabled its report entitled "Act Now: Preventing Human Trafficking of Women, Girls and Gender Diverse People in Canada”.
Human trafficking is a serious and ongoing issue in Canada, and human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation disproportionally affects women, girls and gender diverse people. Through its study, the committee heard testimony about the devastating effects of human trafficking on victims and survivors. Women, girls and gender diverse individuals may experience discrimination and/or systemic oppression that may contribute to their vulnerabilities to becoming victims of human trafficking. The committee believes that addressing human trafficking should be a priority for the Government of Canada.
Preventing human trafficking in Canada requires a collaborative and national approach. This report highlights various measures that can be taken to protect women, girls and gender diverse people from human trafficking in Canada. The committee has made 22 recommendations to help eliminate human trafficking in Canada, and to support victims of this crime.
The report can be consulted on the committee’s web page on the Parliament of Canada website.
