Status of Women Committee Invites the Public to Submit Written Briefs for its Study on Resource Development and Violence Against Indigenous Women and Girls

Ottawa, April 27, 2022 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women invites the public to submit written briefs for the Committee’s study on resource development and violence against Indigenous women and girls.

As part of this study, the Committee will be examining the relationship between resource development and the rise in violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada, in accordance with Calls for Justice‑13.4 and 13.5 of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The Committee requests that written briefs focus on these topics and include specific recommendations for the Government of Canada on how to address this problem.

The Committee is committed to protecting the privacy of those who submit briefs. If you wish to submit a written brief anonymously or do not want a brief to be made public, please inform the Clerk of the Committee at FEWO@parl.gc.ca, and the necessary arrangements will be made. Written briefs will be publicly available unless otherwise requested.

The deadline for the Committee to receive written briefs from the public, in either official language, is Monday, May 9, 2022. Briefs written in Inuktitut, Algonquin, Denesulin (Chipewyan), Cree Michif or Blackfoot will also be accepted. Briefs should not exceed two pages (approximately 1,000 words) and should be emailed to the Clerk of the Committee at FEWO@parl.gc.ca or submitted online through the Committee’s website. Please see the Guide for Submitting Briefs to House of Commons Committees for further information.

The Committee looks forward to hearing from Canadians on this important topic. The Committee will release a final report with recommendations that will propose steps that the Government of Canada could take to help eliminate violence against Indigenous women and girls in the context of resource development projects.

The Committee welcomes all Canadians to follow its work on its website, where additional information is provided on the committee’s meetings and testimony, live proceedings and membership.
