Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motions adopted by the committee on Monday, June 13, 2022, and Tuesday, September 20, 2022, the committee resumed its study of safe sport in Canada.

Kristen Worley, Kelly Favro, Jessica Gaertner and Rebecca Khoury made statements and answered questions.

At 12:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:05 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Suzanne Paulins made a statement and answered questions.

Bonita Zarrillo gave notice of the following motion:

That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage invite Mary-Sophie Harvey to appear, if she chooses, in committee in the coming weeks, as early as June 12.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

Motion

Bonita Zarrillo moved, — That the committee hold an additional meeting on Friday, June 9, 2023.

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:

YEAS: Sébastien Lemire, Bonita Zarrillo — 2;

NAYS: Chris Bittle, Michael Coteau, Lisa Hepfner, Anthony Housefather, Tim Louis, Richard Martel, Martin Shields, Rachael Thomas — 8.

It was agreed, — That in the context of the study of safe sport in Canada, the committee invite Judge Rosemarie Aquilina to appear during the first hour of the meeting on Monday, June 19, 2023, and that drafting instructions be provided to the analysts for a draft report during the second hour.

Motion

Rachael Thomas moved, — That the committee immediately undertake a study regarding the recently announced changes to the Canadian passport; in particular the decision by the government to remove images that reflected Canadian culture and history; that the Minister of Canadian Heritage be invited to appear as part of this study; that this study consist of three meetings; that witness lists be due within five days of the adoption of this motion; and that the committee report its findings and recommendations to the House.

A point of order was raised as to the procedural acceptability of the proposed motion.

At 1:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Chair ruled the motion admissible as he deemed that the subject of the motion can be linked to the committee’s mandate.
