Subject Matter of Bill C-15, An Act respecting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Ottawa, March 9, 2021 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs is beginning a study of the subject matter of Bill C-15, An Act respecting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The committee invites community members and leaders, experts, and members of the public to take part in this study by submitting their observations, comments and recommendations in the form of written briefs.

This bill was introduced by the Minister of Justice on 3 December 2020. If adopted, it would affirm that the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has application in Canadian law. The bill would also provide the federal government with a framework for the implementation of the declaration and to ensure that the laws of Canada are consistent with it.

For more information relating to this study, and to submit a written brief, please visit the committee’s website. The committee will be accepting written submissions of no more than 2,000 words until 23:59 on 8 April 2021.

The committee thanks everyone for their contribution and for their interest in its work.
