An Update on Rail Safety

Ottawa, June 16, 2016 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities tabled its report Update on Rail Safety in the House of Commons. In this report, the Committee makes 19 recommendations for measures to improve rail safety in Canada. The recommendations concern, among other things, federal oversight of the rail industry, the use of technology by the rail industry, grade crossings and railway employee fatigue. The Committee also makes a number of recommendations intended to address Canadians’ concerns about the risks posed by railway operations in their communities.

“On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank each witness and subject matter expert who freely gave of their time and shared their thoughts and ideas about how to make Canada’s railways as safe as possible,” said the Honourable Judy Sgro, P.C., M.P. for Humber River – Black Creek and Chair of the Committee. “The insights provided during this study have not only helped with the drafting of this report but, in the future, will certainly prove valuable to the Government of Canada as laws and regulations are reviewed and created with the goal of improving rail-based commerce and travel for all Canadians,” concluded Ms. Sgro.

The Committee began its study on 21 March 2016. It received testimony from 40 witnesses and received 23 written submissions. Some members of the Committee travelled to Lac-Mégantic, Quebec to meet with regional stakeholders to discuss their recovery and reconstruction following the rail disaster in July 2013.
