Toward a Real Commitment to the Vitality of Official Language Minority Communities

Ottawa, June 20, 2018 -

Today the Honourable Denis Paradis, Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages, tabled the report Toward a Real Commitment to the Vitality of Official Language Minority Communities.

The Committee concluded that federal consultations with official language minority communities (OLMCs) should lead to positive measures that meet the needs of the communities.

This report is the result of work begun in the spring of 2016 when the Committee heard testimony from the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada and the Quebec Community Groups Network, organizations representing OLMCs and Graham Fraser, the former Official Languages Commissioner of Canada. The Committee continued its study in the fall of 2017 with in meetings with representatives of two OLMCs, visiting the anglophone community in Brome-Missisquoi, Quebec, and the francophone community of Petit-de-Grat on Isle Madame in Nova Scotia. The Committee also reviewed its extensive collection of testimony – heard since the start of the 42nd Parliament.

The report can be consulted on the Committee’s web page on the Parliament of Canada website at http://www.parl.gc.ca/LANG-e. Anyone unable to access an electronic copy of the report can obtain a paper copy by contacting the Committee Clerk.

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Official Languages is composed of 11 MPs.
