NEWS RELEASE

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology is wrapping up Phase I of its statutory review of the Copyright Act

Ottawa, October 03, 2018 -

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology (the Committee) will finish Phase I of its statutory review of the Copyright Act (the Act) in October 2018.

The Committee will start Phase II at the beginning of November and Phase III at the end of November.

In Phase II, the Committee will study copyright issues that cut across industries, including the protection of indigenous knowledge and culture, collective rights management, combatting counterfeiting, and exceptions for persons with perceptual disabilities.

In Phase III, lawyers and scholars in the field of copyright will be invited to testify before the Committee.

Lawyers and scholars who wish to testify should send a request to appear to the Committee before 10 November 2018 along with a short summary (100 words) outlining the focus of their testimony.

The Committee may not be able to hear all stakeholders wishing to appear. We therefore encourage all individuals and organizations interested in the review of the Act to submit a brief.

The Committee will accept briefs until 10 December 2018.

Briefs received after this date will not be considered. Briefs must not exceed 2,000 words. They may be sent to indu@parl.gc.ca.

For more information on how to prepare a submission, please consult the Guide for Submitting Briefs to House of Commons Committees.

For more information on the review of the Act, please consult the study’s website.
