Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, the Committee resumed its study on the federal government’s initiative to resettle Syrian refugees to Canada.

John Mandarino, by videoconference from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Adeena Niazi, Moy Wong-Tam, Aleem Syed and Zaib Mirza made statements and answered questions.

At 12:26 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

Motion

Michelle Rempel moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee study ways for Canada to accelerate the asylum applications of Yazidi victims of genocide; that this study be comprised of no less than three (3) meetings to be held as soon as possible; that departmental officials be in attendance for at least one (1) meeting, and that the Committee report its findings to the House; and that Pursuant to Standing Order 109, the government table a comprehensive response thereto.

Amendment

Randeep Sarai moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “ways for Canada to accelerate the asylum applications of Yazidi victims of genocide” with the words “options on how Canada can best support vulnerable groups in inaccessible regions” and the words "one (1) meeting" be replaced by the words "two (2) meetings".

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Randeep Sarai and it was agreed to.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee study options on how Canada can best support vulnerable groups in inaccessible regions; that this study be comprised of no less than three (3) meetings to be held as soon as possible; that departmental officials be in attendance for at least two (2) meetings, and that the Committee report its findings to the House; and that Pursuant to Standing Order 109, the government table a comprehensive response thereto.

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

At 12:50 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:52 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $90,425.60, for the Committee’s travel to Surrey, British Columbia, Calgary, Alberta, Toronto, Ontario and Montréal, Québec in the fall of 2016, be adopted.

It was agreed, — That relevant evidence received from the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and the Department of Citizenship and Immigration and its officials be taken into consideration during the study on the federal government’s initiative to resettle Syrian refugees to Canada, irrespective of the meeting subject when that evidence was provided.

At 12:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
