Ottawa, June 15, 2017 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade presented, to the House of Commons, a report entitled The Canadian Steel Industry’s Ability to Compete Internationally. The report contains eight recommendations relating to, among other things, the need for Canada to engage with its trading partners with a view to finding solutions to global excess steelmaking capacity and the dumping of foreign steel into the Canadian marketplace.

“Based on what Committee members heard from 23 witnesses representing 18 organizations, and considering the Canadian steel industry’s competitive advantages, such as a skilled workforce and easy access to raw materials, our Committee is convinced that the Canadian steel industry is well positioned to compete internationally,” said the Honourable Mark Eyking, P.C., M.P., Chair of the Committee.

He concluded: “That said, it is imperative that Canadian steel producers and their competitors operate on a level playing field. In that regard, the Committee notes the importance of an effective, fair and accessible trade remedy system for all stakeholders in Canada’s steel industry. On behalf of the Committee, I wish to thank the groups and individuals who shared their thoughts about the Canadian steel industry.”
