NEWS RELEASE
HOUSE OF COMMONS SUBCOMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS URGES THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO OFFER SANCTUARY TO GENUINE REFUGEES FROM NORTH KOREA FOR WHOM RESETTLEMENT TO ANOTHER COUNTRY IS NOT AN OPTION
Ottawa, December 05, 2014 -
On 4 December 2014, the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development adopted the following motion:
This Subcommittee recognizes the unique circumstances facing a minority of those fleeing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) when they arrive in the Kingdom of Thailand via the People’s Republic of Laos (Laos) and the People’s Republic of China (China), namely that:
- they cannot be returned directly to North Korea because they would face gross human rights violations, including torture and possibly execution;
- they cannot be returned to Laos or China because they would likely be forcibly repatriated to North Korea;
- they do not meet the United Nations definition of refugee because they have the option of going to the Republic of Korea (South Korea); and
Therefore, be it resolved that this Subcommittee urges the Government of Canada to offer sanctuary to genuine refugees from North Korea for whom resettlement to another country is not an option.
