The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Jamie Nicholls, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Ruth Ellen Brosseau for Manon Perreault, Devinder Shory for Joyce Bateman and Robert Sopuck for Joyce Bateman.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Conference Board of Canada: Pedro Antunes, Deputy Chief Economist and Executive Director. Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick: Anne Hébert, Director General. MC Consultants enr.: Maurice Chiasson, Consultant. Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities: Louis Allain, Director General.

 

Yvon Godin gave notice of the following motion:

That the committee invite the minister of Employment and Social Development Canada to appear before the committee before June 19th 2014 to explain why his department has refused to finance the project « Développer des pratiques innovantes en ACE pour la main-d’œuvre qui vit en contexte linguistique minoritaire » which was developed by the Réseau pour le développement de l’alphabétisme et des compétences (RESDAC).

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 6, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of the economic situation of Canada's minority linguistic communities.
 

Pedro Antunes, Anne Hébert, Maurice Chiasson and Louis Allain, by videoconference from Winnipeg, Manitoba, made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 10:30 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:35 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
