EVIDENCE

Thursday, October 24, 2013

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

  (0845)

[Translation]

Honourable members of the committee, I see a quorum.

[English]

I must inform members that the clerk of the committee can receive motions only for the election of the chair. The clerk cannot receive other types of motions and cannot entertain points of order or participate in debate.
We can now proceed to the election of the chair.

[Translation]

I would like to nominate Mike Wallace as chair.
    Are there any other motions?

[English]

Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    Some hon. members: Yes.
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried.

[Translation]

Before Mr. Wallace takes the chair, if it pleases the committee, we will proceed with the election of the vice-chairs.

[English]

    Mr. Dechert.
I would like to nominate Madame Françoise Boivin as vice-chair of the committee.

[Translation]

    Any other motions?

[English]

Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    Some hon. members: Yes.
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Françoise Boivin duly elected first vice-chair of the committee.

[Translation]

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the second vice-chair must be a member of an opposition party other than the official opposition party.
    It's a tough choice.

[English]

I would like to propose Sean Casey.
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    Some hon. members: Yes.
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Mr. Casey duly elected second vice-chair of the committee.
I now invite Mr. Wallace to take the chair.
Thank you, everyone, for voting for the chair. Welcome to the justice committee. We had a very good committee last session and I'm assuming we'll have the same process again this time.
There are some new members who I want to welcome to the committee.
Really the only thing we had on today's agenda was the election of the chair, so my recommendation is that for next Tuesday we will do the routine procedures first and then we will have a subcommittee on agenda to figure out what we're doing.
I will just remind the committee that next Thursday we do not have a committee because we're having a Friday schedule.
We will do routine motions and then we'll do the subcommittee. As well as we can, we'll figure out what we're going to do for the rest of the year up to the end of December. We have a couple of meetings before the first break, and then I think we have six or eight meetings after that. Is that okay?
    Some hon. members: Agreed.
The Chair: I'll take a motion to adjourn.
An hon. member: I so move.
The Chair: All those in favour?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Chair: The meeting is adjourned.
