The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 8:45 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Libby Davies, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Claude Gravelle, Wladyslaw Lizon, James Lunney, Dany Morin, David Wilks and Terence Young.

Acting Members present: Hon. Laurie Hawn for Ben Lobb and Dave MacKenzie for Eve Adams.

Other Members present: Nathan Cullen.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Karin Phillips, Analyst.

Appearing: Hon. Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health.

Witnesses: Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Bruce Archibald, President. Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Alain Beaudet, President. Department of Health: George Da Pont, Deputy Minister; Paul Mayers. Public Health Agency of Canada: Krista Outhwaite, Acting Deputy Head and Associate Deputy Minister; Gregory Taylor, Deputy Chief Public Health Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), and the Orders of Reference of Thursday, February 27, and Wednesday, March 5, 2014, Main Estimates 2014-15: Votes 1 and 5 under CANADIAN INSTITUTES OF HEALTH RESEARCH, Votes 1, 5 and 10 under HEALTH, Vote 1 under PATENTED MEDICINE PRICES REVIEW BOARD, Votes 1, 5 and 10 under PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCY OF CANADA , and Votes 1 and 5 under CANADIAN FOOD INSPECTION AGENCY.

The Vice-Chair called Vote 1 under HEALTH.

Hon. Rona Ambrose made a statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 9:48 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

The witnesses answered questions.
