Meeting No. 86

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

The Standing Committee on National Defence met in camera at 3:56 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Chris Alexander, James Bezan, Corneliu Chisu, Cheryl Gallant, Jack Harris, Jean-François Larose, Hon. John McKay, Christine Moore, Rick Norlock, Ted Opitz and Mark Strahl.

Acting Members present: Robert Chisholm for Tarik Brahmi.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolfgang Koerner, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: LGen Stuart Beare, Commander, Canadian Joint Operations Command; RAdm Peter Ellis, Deputy Commander Expeditionary, Canadian Joint Operations Command; MGen Jim Ferron, Commander, Canadian Contribution, Training Mission Afghanistan.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee withdraw its call to Mr. Richard Fadden, Deputy Minister of National Defence, to appear before the Committee pursuant to Standing Order 111(1), and that Mr. Fadden be invited to appear before the Committee in the fall of 2013 pursuant to Standing 0rder 108(1).

It was agreed, — That, in relation to the motion adopted on May 27, 2013, and the Committee's study of the Care of Ill and Injured Canadian Forces Members, and regarding the Reserve Force Pension Plan, Major General David Millar, Chief of Military Personnel, be invited to appear before the Committee from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed in a public video-recorded session.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, September 29, 2011, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the mission in Afghanistan.

LGen Stuart Beare made a statement and, with MGen Jim Ferron, answered questions.

At 5:06 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
