The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 8:52 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Robert Chisholm, Patricia Davidson, Fin Donnelly, Randy Kamp, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck, Philip Toone, John Weston, Rodney Weston and Stephen Woodworth.

 

Acting Members present: Hoang Mai for Jonathan Tremblay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tim Williams, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Fisheries and Oceans: David Burden, Acting Regional Director General, Central and Arctic Region; Becky Cudmore, Senior Science Advisor, Central and Arctic Region, Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatics Sciences, Burlington; Nick Mandrak, Research Scientist, Central and Arctic Region, Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatics Sciences, Burlington.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Lawrence MacAulay moved, — That, because the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) has been providing public policy makers both within Canada and around the world with exceptional and unique research for over 40 years in areas such as aquaculture and freshwater ecosystems, and given the impending timeline in which the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) will decide whether to remediate, shutter, or transfer the ELA to a third party, the Committee immediately study the ELA, the research done onsite, its impacts on public policy, and the potential consequences of closing, remediating, or transferring the ELA to a third party.

 

Randy Kamp moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and the results of the vote was announced: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 5.

Whereupon, the Chair voted in the affirmative.

Accordingly, the motion was agreed to.

 

At 8:55 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:57 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 9:16 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:18 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, the Committee resumed its study on invasive species that pose a threat to the Great Lakes system.
 

Dave Burden and Becky Cudmore made a statement and, with Nick Mandrak, answered questions.

 

At 10:48 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
