The Standing Committee on International Trade met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Chair, the Hon. Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Ron Cannan, Robert Chisholm, Raymond Côté, Hon. Wayne Easter, Russ Hiebert, Ed Holder, Gerald Keddy, Hon. Rob Merrifield, Ève Péclet, Mathieu Ravignat, Bev Shipley and Devinder Shory.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Chief, Macroeconomics and Trade; Alexandre Gauthier, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development: Don Stephenson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade Policy and Negotiations; Kirsten Hillman, Director General, Trade Negotiations Bureau; Barbara Martin, Director General, Middle East and Maghreb Bureau; Ken Macartney, Director General, South, Southeast Asia and Oceania; Neil Reeder, Director General, Latin America and Caribbean Bureau.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on international trade and free trade negotiations.
 

Kirsten Hillman, Barbara Martin, Ken Macartney and Neil Reeder made statements and, with Don Stephenson, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Wayne Easter moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(1), the Committee send for the government’s comprehensive strategy plan referenced by officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade who appeared before the Committee on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 and established to respond to the “Buy American” provisions of President Obama’s jobs plan which was announced on September 12, 2011.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 6.

 

At 12:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
