The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 3:42 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Rob Moore, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Ray Boughen, Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Gordon Brown, Paul Calandra, Andrew Cash, Matthew Dubé, Jim Hillyer, Hon. Rob Moore, Pierre Nantel, Blake Richards, Scott Simms and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Nycole Turmel for Matthew Dubé.

 

Other Members present: Nycole Turmel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Museums Association: Kirstin Evenden, Vice-President. Canadian Anthropology Society: Lorne Holyoak, President. Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 29, 2013, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-49, An Act to amend the Museums Act in order to establish the Canadian Museum of History and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.
 

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:34 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:39 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mark O'Neill made a statement and, with David Morrison, answered questions.

 

Pierre Nantel moved, — That the current study be extended by two (2) meetings in order to allow the Committee to hear from more witnesses.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

At 5:38 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:50 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Paul Calandra, it was agreed, — That the evidence of the in camera meeting on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, be made public.

 

John McAvity, Kirstin Evenden, James L. Turk, Victor Rabinovitch, Lorne Holyoak and Anthony Wilson-Smith made statements and answered questions.

 

At 7:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
