The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst. House of Commons: Paul Cardegna, Committee Clerk.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion moved by Wayne Easter on Thursday March 10, 2011,which reads as follows:

“That the Committee recommend that the government place a moratorium on any approval of Roundup Ready Alfalfa until the government completes public research into: (a) Canada’s ability to ensure the genetic integrity, production and preservation of a diversity of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), non-GMO and organic alfalfa production, (b) the ability of Canada’s handling and transportation system to ensure segregation of forage seeds and detection of genetic co-mingling in alfalfa seeds and hay, (c) the development of industry-led, third party audit and verification systems; and that these findings be reported back to the Committee; and that this motion be reported to the House”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Pierre Lemieux moved, — That the Committee proceed to another order of business.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 6.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Wayne Easter.

The debate continued.

 

Randy Hoback moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “the government place a moratorium on” with the words “as part of the study on biotechnology, the Committee study and include recommendations regarding” and by deleting the words “that this motion be reported to the House”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
