Meeting No. 35

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met at 12:04 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Omar Alghabra, Mike Allen, David Anderson, Catherine Bell, Leon Benoit, Ken Boshcoff, Claude DeBellefeuille, Richard Harris, Christian Ouellet, Lloyd St. Amand and Bradley R. Trost.

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Lloyd St. Amand and Roger Valley for Alan Tonks.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst ; Fréderic Beauregard-Tellier, Analyst.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding any motions previously adopted by the Committee, the Standing Committee on Natural Resources examine Atomic Energy Canada Limited’s (AECL) and the government's decision to discontinue the MAPLE reactors project and its ramifications on the supply of isotopes by calling relevant witnesses, the Minister of Natural Resources and Hugh MacDiarmid, President and Chief Executive Officer, AECL and MDS Nordion in an effort to better understand AECL’s future plans, and to finalize the isotopes study already started by the Committee, immediately following the forestry study.

It was agreed, — That the Minister be invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, June 6, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

It was agreed, — That proposed witness list be submitted to the Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2008.

At 1:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
