The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Hon. Raymond Chan, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Denis Lebel, Hon. Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Kevin Sorenson, Caroline St-Hilaire and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Daryl Kramp for Wajid Khan and Alexa McDonough for Paul Dewar.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; James Lee, Analyst; Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Canada: H.E. Omar Samad, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Canada. Canadian Food Security Policy Group: Rachel Bezner Kerr, Research Coordinator, Soils, Food and Healthy Communities Project; Stuart Clark, Chair, Canadian Foodgrains Bank; Mamby Fofana, Member of the Board of Directors, Unitarian Service Committee of Canada; Joshua Mukusya, Founder, Utooni Development Project; Susan Walsh, Executive Director, Unitarian Service Committee of Canada.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 20, 2007, the Committee proceeded to a briefing with the Canadian Food Security Policy Group.
 

Stuart Clark, Joshua Mukusya and Mamby Fofana made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:05 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 20, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 

The Ambassador made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:53 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:56 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Bryon Wilfert moved, — That pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development call on senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency to provide the Committee with a comprehensive and detailed briefing on the Government’s current strategy and involvement in the Horn of Africa, specifically Somalia.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 1:14 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
