Supplementary Report of the New Democratic Party to the Report to Parliament by the Ethics Committee, on the Study of the Mulroney Airbus Settlement

While the NDP members of the Committee agree that the body of the report accurately reflects the testimony given by witnesses and the inconsistencies in testimony that justify a full public inquiry with a broad mandate, we believe the report is incomplete and deficient in that it does not recommend that the Government takes steps to re-coup the $2.1 million dollars paid to Brian Mulroney as settlement of the defamation lawsuit he brought against the Government of Canada.

We therefore submit that the Report should have included a second recommendation as follows:

“That the Department of Justice should ask a court to set aside the $2.1 million dollar settlement in the Mulroney Airbus defamation lawsuit on the grounds that Mr. Mulroney did not disclose the full extent of his financial relationship with Karlheinz Schreiber.”
