Meeting No. 7

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:09 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Jason Kenney, presiding.

Members of the Subcommittee present: Jason Kenney, Wayne Marston, Ted Menzies, Mario Silva, Kevin Sorenson and Caroline St-Hilaire.

In attendance: Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development: Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs: Mr. Gordon Houlden, Director General, East Asia Bureau; Adèle Dion, Director General, Human Security and Human Rights. Canadian International Development Agency: Hau Sing Tse, Vice-President, Asia Branch; Jeff Nankivell, Director, China and Northeast Asia Division.

Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, May 10, 2006 and the motion adopted by the Subcommittee, October 24, 2006, the Subcommittee resumed its study on Human Rights in China.

Gordon Houldon, Adèle Dion and Hau Sing Tse made statements and, with Jeff Nankivell, answered questions.

The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.

It was agreed, — That, Rebiya Kadeer be invited to appear before the committee on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

At 12:56 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
