Government must do more to implement the Auditor General's recommendations: Committee report

Ottawa, May 29, 2007 -

The Office of the Auditor General is working effectively and performing a valuable service to taxpayers, but often her findings often fall on deaf ears, according to a report of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts tabled in the House of Commons today by Chair Shawn Murphy, MP.

The report, which examined the Auditor General’s 2005-06 Departmental Performance Report and 2006-07 Report on Plans and Priorities stated that the Committee continues to be very pleased with the work of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG). Parliamentarians and Canadians highly value the hard work of the Auditor General and her dedicated staff.

Unfortunately, the independence of the OAG is threatened by the intervention of Treasury Board Secretariat in the collective bargaining process, and departments and agencies do not appear to be doing everything possible to implement the Auditor General’s recommendations, as only 44% of the recommendations were implemented four years after they were made.

“It is very concerning that so few of the Auditor General’s recommendations are implemented,” said Mr. Murphy. “If the government is to take good governance seriously, then they must take steps to ensure that the Auditor General’s recommendations are followed.”
