The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:12 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Bonnie Brown, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Rick Dykstra, Steven John Fletcher, Hon. Hedy Fry, Christiane Gagnon, Rob Merrifield and Penny Priddy.

 

Acting Members present: Tina Keeper for Hon. Ken Dryden and Paul Szabo for Hon. Brenda Chamberlain.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Public Health Agency of Canada: David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer; Kelly Stone, Director, Childhood and Adolescence, Centre for Health Promotion. Department of Health: Kathy Langlois, Director General, Community Programs Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch; Linda Dabros, Director, Office of Drug Strategy Secretariat and Strategic Policy. Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Barbara Beckett, Assistant Director, Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of a new strategy for the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
 

David Butler-Jones made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That the Commitee examine a draft report on the subject of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, at the meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 6, 2006, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., following the appearance of the Minister of Health on the Main Estimates.

 

At 12:52 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
