The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Patricia Davidson, Johanne Deschamps, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Yasmin Ratansi, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Claude DeBellefeuille for Nicole Demers, Richard Nadeau for Johanne Deschamps, Glen Douglas Pearson for Hon. Belinda Stronach and Dave Van Kesteren for Nina Grewal.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Nathalie Pothier, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Quebec Native Women's Association: Ellen Gabriel, President. As an individual: Diane Martz. Rural Women Take Action on Poverty Committee: Colleen Purdon, Coordinator.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 10, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of proactive pay equity legislation.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Maria Minna, — as follows;

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) that the Standing Committee on the Status of Women recommend to the government to immediately introduce proactive pay equity legislation as recommended by the 2004 federal Pay Equity Task Force and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House without delay.

The debate continued.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — that the debate on the motion be concluded after ten minutes.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Claude DeBellefeuille, Irene Mathyssen, Maria Minna, Richard Nadeau, Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson — 6; NAYS: Patricia Davidson, Joy Smith, Bruce Stanton, Dave Van Kesteren — 4.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 30th, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of economic security of women.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:24 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Honourable Bev Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Status of Women to appear before the Committee to discuss the reports on Plans and Priorities.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
