The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in camera at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Gary Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Charlie Angus, Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Ed Fast, Maka Kotto, Luc Malo, Gary Schellenberger and Chris Warkentin.

 

Acting Members present: Ken Epp for Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Charles Hubbard for Francis Scarpaleggia, Hon. Shawn Murphy for Tina Keeper, Hon. Geoff Regan for Scott Simms and Robert Vincent for Luc Malo.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Statutory review for the purposes of Section 5.1 of the Canada Travelling Exhibitions Indemnification Act
 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair recommended now that the matter is before the courts, this committee should refrain from discussing it in order to avoid the risk of encroaching on the independence of the judiciary.

 

The decision of the Chair was appealed. The question: Shall the decision of the Chair be sustained? was put and the decision was rejected by a show of hands - Yeas 4, Nays 7.

 

It was agreed, - That the Committee hold a meeting on Supplementary Estimates (A,) 2006-2007 and that the Minister of Canadian Heritage be invited to appear.

 

It was agreed, - That the proposed operational budget in the amount of $19,300.00 for inviting witnesses to appear in Ottawa on its study on Court Challenges Program be adopted.

 

At 4:54 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
