The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Gary Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Charlie Angus, Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Ed Fast, Tina Keeper, Maka Kotto, Luc Malo, Francis Scarpaleggia, Gary Schellenberger and Chris Warkentin.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Stephen Owen for Scott Simms and Lee Richardson for Sylvie Boucher.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst; Matthew Carnaghan, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Maka Kotto moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage recommend that the government maintain the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) at the same level as in fiscal year 2005-2006, that a new museum policy be established, and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House as soon as possible.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 3.

 

On motion of Charlie Angus, it was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage request officials from Department of Canadian Heritage to come before the Committee in order to explain where cuts in the department will be made.

 

Charlie Angus moved, — That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage invite officials from the Canadian Museums Association,the Heritage Canada Foundation, la Société des musées québecois and the Museum of Alberta to come before the committee in order to speak to the impacts of the cuts on their ability to deliver their services.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 3.

 

Mauril Bélanger moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage recommends that the government continue funding the Court Challenges Program at the fiscal 2005-2006 level and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House forthwith.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 3.

 

Charlie Angus tabled the following motion - That the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage invites witnesses from organizations who have utilized the Court Challenges Program.

 

The Committee agreed to invite Officials from the following organisations to appear before it in the coming weeks:

  • From the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)
  • From the Museums Association.
  • From the Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund.
  • From Telefilm Canada.
  • From the Department of Canadian Heritage on Main Estimates 2006-2007 and on the Government Response to the Report on Canadian Feature Film Industry.
  • From the Department of Canadian Heritage and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada on the future of Indian Art Aquisition Program.
  • From Northern Ontario Francophones organizations and Acadians organizations on their specific needs with respect to the federal administration.
 

At 4:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
