NEW: Cross-country hearings of the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the Standing Committee on Finance
Ottawa, March 11, 2005 -
Today, the Subcommittee on Fiscal Imbalance of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance continued its study with public hearings in Toronto, Ontario.
The Subcommittee met with members of the Ontario Legislature, including Mr. Greg Sobara, Minister of Finance, Mr. Hike Colle, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Finance, Mr. John Tory, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, and Mr. Michael Prue, Finance Critic for the New Democratic Party of Ontario.
As well, the Subcommittee heard from representatives of the Ontario Ministry of Finance, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the C.D. Howe Institute and the Professor Richard Bird, of the University of Toronto.
"As was the case when the Subcommittee met with witnesses in Halifax, we heard a broad range of opinions about the fiscal imbalance in Canada, considering both its vertical and its horizontal dimensions," said Yvan Loubier, M.P. (Saint-Hyacinthe - Bagot), Chair of the Subcommittee. "Today`s hearings were particularly interesting, since we received testimony from three different political parties, as well as the views from notable organizations and academics. Certainly, the Subcommittee is benefitting from the range of perspectives presented by witnesses."
The Subcommittee will continue its study with public hearings in Regina on 21 March, in Victoria on 4 April, in Quebec City on 11 April, in Winnipeg on 18 April and in Edmonton on 2 May. On 18 February, public hearings were held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At that time, Mr. Mitchell Murphy, Treasurer for the Province of Prince Edward Island, was among the Subcommittee`s witnesses.
