NEWS RELEASE

NEW FUNDING MECHANISM NEEDED FOR THE AUDITOR GENERAL OF CANADA

Ottawa, June 07, 2005 -

Today, Mr. John Williams, MP, and Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, tabled the Committee’s 13th Report.

The Report addresses the plans and priorities of the office of the Auditor General of Canada for fiscal year 2005-06 and beyond. The Committee endorsed the Auditor General’s planned future activities but believes that efforts to establish a new way of funding her Office are taking far too long.

Noting that House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics the has tabled a report on funding mechanisms for Officers of Parliament (including the Auditor General of Canada), the Committee has recommended that both the Treasury Board Secretariat and the Office of the Auditor General of Canada submit reports to the Committee on the status of efforts to establish a new funding mechanism for the Office of the Auditor General.
