NEWS RELEASE
STABLE FUNDING AND A NEW FUNDING PROCESS ARE NEEDED FOR THE OFFICE OF THE AUDITOR GENERAL OF CANADA
Ottawa, February 14, 2005 -
OTTAWA: Mr. John Williams, Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, today tabled a report recommending a one-time permanent increase in the Auditor General’s annual budget and a new funding mechanism to guarantee the Auditor General’s independence.
In its seventh report so far in this legislative session, the Committee also recommends that Treasury Board Secretariat study why fewer than 50 percent of the Auditor General’s recommendations are not implemented even though they are fully accepted and endorsed by federal departments and agencies.
The Committee’s report – which contains three other related recommendations – is in response to its recent review of the performance and future plans of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. This review found that the Office provides excellent value for money by identifying problems in the delivery of government services and products as well as potential solutions to these problems.
