The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 1:45 p.m. this day, in the Battery Hotel & Suites, Riverhead/Pegasus Rooms, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Raynald Blais, Loyola Hearn, Randy Kamp, Bill Matthews, Hon. Shawn Murphy, Scott Simms, Peter Stoffer and Tom Wappel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Petty Harbour Fishermen's Co-operative: Tom Best, President. Department of Fisheries and Oceans - Canadian Coast Guard: Willie Bruce, Regional Director, Fisheries and Habitat Management, Newfoundland and Labrador Region. Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Wayne Follett, Regional Director General, Newfoundland and Labrador Region; Henry Lear, Program Advisor, Environmental Science; George R. Lilly, Fisheries Ecologist. Panel on Industry, Union & Other Interest Groups: David Decker; Lana Payne; Gus Etchegary; Richard Gill; Fred Winsor.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion agreed to by the Committee on February 8, 2005, the Committee resumed its study of the northern cod, including the events leading to the collapse of the fishery and the failure of the stock to re-establish itself since the moratorium.
 
Tom Best made a statement and answered questions.
 

At 2:50 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:02 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The witnesses on the Panel on Industry, Union & Other Interest Groups made statements and answered questions.

 
On motion by Loyola Hearn,—It was agreed, by unanimous consent, that David Decker of the Fish, Food & Allied Workers Union be given 5 minutes to make a presentation regarding shrimp.

David Decker made a presentation.
 

At 5:05 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:14 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Wayne Follet made a presentation and, with George R. Lilly, Garry B. Stenson and W. Henry Lear, answered questions.
 

At 7:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
