The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Raynald Blais, John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Randy Kamp, Bill Matthews, Hon. Shawn Murphy, Jean-Yves Roy, Scott Simms, Peter Stoffer and Tom Wappel.

 

Acting Members present: Norman Doyle for Loyola Hearn , James Lunney for Gerald Keddy , Lloyd St. Amand for Hon. Shawn Murphy and Paul Steckle for Scott Simms .

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst; Alan Nixon, Principal.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That representatives of the Nattivak Hunters and Trappers Association and the Baffin Fisheries Coalition be invited to appear before the Committee in relation to the turbot quota of the Baffin Fisheries Coalition in the Davis Strait at the earliest opportunity when the Committee completes its work on its report on the 2004 Fraser River sockeye salmon harvest.

 

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $ 16,500, for the period of February 7, 2005 to March 31, 2005 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Subcommittee of the Liaison Committee.

 

At 11:20 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:25 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study of the northern cod including the events leading to the collapse of the fishery and the failure of the stock to re-establish itself since the moratorium.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure meet on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 to discuss matters related to future business.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the 2004 Fraser River sockeye salmon harvest.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 1:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
