MINISTER OF INDUSTRY TO APPEAR BEFORE THE HOUSE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE ON KYOTO
Ottawa, April 08, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Industry, will be appearing before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. The subject to be discussed is Canada's implementation of the Kyoto Protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol came into force on 16 February, 2005. Canada is currently in the process of determining how to meet its Kyoto target and an updated plan is to be released on 13 April, 2005. The Committee is currently undertaking an in-depth study of how to fairly and effectively attain emissions reductions.
Addressing climate change, particularly in the long term, will require technological change. This change will be the result of innovation at the global level and here in Canada. Industry Canada plays a key role in the government’s attempts to encourage an innovative and productive economy. The government’s goal is to be a leader in environmental technology innovation and the Department of Industry will be key to attaining this goal.
The meeting is to take place Tuesday, 12 April between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon in room 237-C, Centre Block on Parliament Hill.
