Ottawa, April 05, 2005 - Media representatives please be advised that the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development will be holding a special meeting to examine the changes to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act 1999 (CEPA) as proposed in Bill C-43, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 23, 2005.
The proposed changes will remove the word “toxic” from CEPA and could have implications, not only for how the government is addressing climate change, but how it will be able to prevent pollution and protect the environment and human health through the amended Act.
The witnesses will include Stewart Elgie, associate professor of law, University of Ottawa; Paul Muldoon, Executive Director, Canadian Environmental Law Association and Matthew Bramley of the Pembina Institute. The meeting is to take place Wednesday, 6 April between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in room 362 East Block, Parliament Hill.
