The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in a televised session at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Alan Tonks, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Nathan Cullen, Brian Jean, David J. McGuinty, Bob Mills, Yasmin Ratansi, Christian Simard, Alan Tonks and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Paul Crête for Christian Simard, Hon. Jack Layton for Nathan Cullen and Francis Scarpaleggia for Yasmin Ratansi.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tim Williams, Analyst; Kristen Douglas, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of the Environment: Samy Watson, Deputy Minister; Cynthia Wright, Director General, Strategic Priorities, Environmental Protection Service; Alex Manson, Acting Director General, Climate Change Bureau, Policy; Mike Beale, Acting Director General, Economic and Regulatory Affairs Directorate, Policy Integration.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108, the Committee commenced consideration of the subject-matter of Bill C-43, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 23, 2005.
 

Samy Watson made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

On motion of Nathan Cullen, it was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development meet on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, to hear testimony from Stewart Elgie of the the University of Ottawa, Matthew Bramley of the Pembina Institute and other witnesses, as the committee sees fit on the subject of the amendments to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act proposed in Bill C-43.

 

At 1:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
