The Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met in camera at 3:42 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N Centre Block, the Chair, Derek Lee, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Sue Barnes, Chuck Cadman, Marlene Catterall, Hon. Yvon Charbonneau, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Robert Lanctôt, Derek Lee, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, John Maloney, Richard Marceau and Paddy Torsney.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Principal Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Justice: Judith Bellis, General Counsel; Marc Giroux, Judicial Affairs Advisor.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to its business.
 

It was agreed, — That the following motion be tabled with the Committee:

“That, in the opinion of this Committee, Canada’s law must recognize suicide bombings as Crimes against Humanity and therefore, the Government of Canada should launch an international campaign so that international law be modified accordingly”.

 

At 3:56 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:58 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the process by which judges are appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:46 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 5:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
