The Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 308 West Block, the Chair, Derek Lee, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Sue Barnes, Chuck Cadman, Marlene Catterall, Hon. Yvon Charbonneau, Hon. Paul DeVillers, Hon. Stéphane Dion, Derek Lee, John Maloney, Richard Marceau, Hon. Lorne Nystrom, Kevin Sorenson, Vic Toews and Paddy Torsney.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Principal Analyst; Robin MacKay, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an Individual: Patrick Monahan, Dean, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the process by which judges are appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.
 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

On motion of Paddy Torsney, it was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108, there be established a Subcommittee on Solicitation laws, as defined in the Criminal Code, composed of five (5) members, including a Chair to be named by the Committee and one member from each of the recognized parties in the House; that the Subcomittee have all of the powers of the Committee under Standing Order 108(1)(a), except the power to report directly to the House.

 

At 5:16 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera to consider matters related to Committee business.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
