Meeting No. 12

Wednesday, April 9, 2003

The Subcommittee on Children and Youth at Risk of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met by videoconference at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, John Godfrey, presiding.

Members of the Subcommittee present: John Godfrey, Larry Spencer and Alan Tonks.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the University of Victoria: Dr. Jessica Ball, Coordinator, First Nations Partnership Programs, Professor, School of Child and Youth Care; Dr. Alan Pence, Director, Early Childhood Development Virtual University, Professor, School of Child and Youth Care. From the Amiskwaciy Academy: Dr. Phyllis Cardinal, Principal. From the First Nations Education Steering Committee: By videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia: Christa Williams, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and its Order of Reference from the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, November 5, 2002, Meeting No. 1), the Subcommittee resumed its study on aboriginal children from 0 to 12 years living in urban areas.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 5:03 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
