The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Larry Bagnell, Paul Crête, Cheryl Gallant, Walt Lastewka, Brian Masse, Dan McTeague, Gilbert Normand, James Rajotte, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

 

Acting Members present: Marlene Jennings for Paddy Torsney, Réal Ménard for Jocelyne Girard-Bujold and Massimo Pacetti for Andy Savoy.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Analyst; Lalita Acharya, Analyst; Robin MacKay, Legal Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four (4) members of the Committee in relation to the Canadian Grand Prix.
 

Paul Crête moved, — That the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology lend its firm and enthusiastic support to the Government of Quebec’s Montreal Grand Prix mission, to ensure that the Canadian Grand Prix remains in Montreal in 2004 and in subsequent years.

That the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology proceed with a hearing of automobile manufacturers, to make them aware of the importance of the Grand Prix.

 

Réal Ménard moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting the words “proceed with a hearing of automobile manufacturers, to make them aware of the importance of the Grand Prix” and substituting the words “call before the Committee Mr. Normand Legault, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Prix of Canada, as soon as possible”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Réal Ménard and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 10; NAYS: 1.

At 4:21 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:22 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee resume its study of the Potential Economic Impact on Canadian Industry of Implementing the Kyoto Protocol and that the Minister of Industry and the Minister of Natural Resources be invited to appear before the Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet in camera in order to give direction to the Library of Parliament Research Staff for the drafting of a Report on the Gasoline Prices in Canada.

 

It was agreed, — That, further to the Committee's study on the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations of the Patent Act, Ms. Margaret Smith be invited to appear in camera before the Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That meetings be held on Technology Partners, Banks and the Automobile Industry .

 

It was agreed, — That representatives from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada be invited to appear before the Committee.

 

At 4:46 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
