The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in a televised session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Cheryl Gallant, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Dan McTeague, Hon. Gilbert Normand, James Rajotte, Andy Savoy and Brent St. Denis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Lalita Acharya and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the House of Commons: Hon. Rey Pagtakhan, Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development).

Witnesses: From the Department of Industry: Marie Tobin, Director General, Innovation Policy Branch. From the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Dr. Thomas A. Brzustowski, President. From Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada: France Landriault, Director, Corporate Performance, Evaluation and Audit Division. From the National Research Council Canada: Pat Mortimer, Secretary General.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House dated February 26, 2003, the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2004, Votes, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 110 and 115, under INDUSTRY.

The Hon. Rey Pagtakhan, Secretary of State and Marie Tobin each made an opening statement and, with Dr. Thomas Brzustowski, France Landriault and Pat Mortimer answered questions.

At 5:17 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
