Meeting No. 19

Tuesday, March 25, 2003

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:49 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Judi Longfield, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, John Finlay, Judi Longfield, Gurbax Malhi, Raymond Simard, Monte Solberg and Diane St-Jacques.

Acting Members present: Yvon Godin for Libby Davies and Sébastien Gagnon for Suzanne Tremblay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin and Kevin Kerr, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the New Brunswick Coalition for Literacy: Ian Thorn, Coordinator, National Literacy Project, Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada. From the Nunavut Literacy Council: Cayla Chenier, Literacy Development Coordinator. From the Ontario Literacy Coalition: Sue Folinsbee, Acting Clerk, Co-Executive Director. From the "Regroupement des groupes populaires en Alphabétisation du Québec": Christian Pelletier, Coordinator.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Literacy.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
